For perturbation V0e−β2x2 and oscillator inverse length α=mω/ℏ, direct Gaussian expectation values give ΔE0=V0α/(α2+β2)1/2 and ΔE1=V0α3/(α2+β2)3/2. A narrow perturbation samples the odd state's node and suppresses its shift by two extra powers of α/β. A broad perturbation approaches a constant energy offset for both states.
