Full title: Giant room-temperature magnetoresistance in single-crystal Fe/MgO/Fe magnetic tunnel junctions. Nature Materials 3, 868–871, DOI 10.1038/nmat1257. A primary demonstration supporting the tunnel-junction alternative, without claiming that a larger magnetoresistance alone guarantees lower sensor noise.
