For proper lower semicontinuous convex functions, the Moreau envelope has gradient ∇fτ=(I−proxτf)/τ. This follows by subgradient inversion under convex conjugacy and the quadratic conjugate. Firm nonexpansiveness of the proximal residual makes the gradient 1/τ-Lipschitz continuous.
