For a fixed formal pseudodifferential operator P=∑jpj∂j and a monic differential operator L=∂m+∑l=0m−1ul∂l, cyclicity of the Adler trace gives lP(L)=Tr(PL) with c=∫p−m−1dx and al=res(∂lP)=∑k=0l(kl)pk−l−1(k). The function is affine in the variable coefficients; its variational derivative with respect to ul is al.
