For a harmonic oscillator with Hamiltonian H=p2/(2m)+mω2q2/2, where m,ω>0, define
I=21(mωq2+mωp2),q=mω2Isinθ,p=2Imωcosθ.

These action-angle variables are defined for I>0, with a local angle θ modulo 2π. A proof of canonicity is θq=p/(2I) and θp=−q/(2I), which give {θ,I}=1 using the Poisson bracket. Substitution gives H=ωI. Hamilton's equations then prove I(t)=I(0) and θ(t)=θ(0)+ωt. The action integral around the corresponding phase space ellipse is ∮pdq=2πI, so I is the usual normalized action variable. The angle is undefined at the zero-energy origin.
