Using an axisymmetric hydrodynamic mass flux function, set s=s(ψ), ℓ=Ruϕ=ℓ(ψ) and ε=ε(ψ). The azimuthal vorticity is ωϕ=−R∇⋅(∇ψ/(ρR2)). The meridional projection of the Crocco form of the unsteady Euler equation gives the displayed equation. The mass density also satisfies the Bernoulli relation ε=∣∇ψ∣2/(2ρ2R2)+ℓ2/(2R2)+w+Φ, so an equation of state is part of closing the system.
