For an ideal gas with constant composition, set R=kB/mˉ, where mˉ is the mean particle mass. Constant downward gravitational acceleration g and T=T0−αz>0 give p′=−(g/RT)p by hydrostatic equilibrium. Integration gives p/p0=(T/T0)g/(Rα), and the ideal gas law gives the displayed mass density ratio. The isothermal limit α→0 is ρ/ρ0=exp[−gz/(RT0)].
