For cell counts Yij in a two-way contingency table, the independence model is
Yij∼Pois(μij),logμij=λ+λi(1)+λj(2).
(1)
The absence of an interaction makes μij factor as a row effect times a column effect. Its maximum-likelihood fitted values are
μij=y++yi+y+j.
