For N distinguishable noninteracting spins, let a fraction α occupy the level +ϵ and the remainder occupy −ϵ. The Stirling formula gives
S=−NkB[αlogα+(1−α)log(1−α)],E=Nϵ(2α−1).
(1)
The relation 1/T=∂S/∂E yields
α=1+e2ϵ/(kBT)1,E=−Nϵtanh(kBTϵ).
(2)
Positive temperature corresponds to 0≤α<1/2; a population inversion 1/2<α≤1 has negative temperature.
