Choose coordinates xμ=(ct,x) and Minkowski metric η=diag(1,−1,−1,−1). With the convention F0i=−Ei/c and Fij=−ϵijkBk, lowering both tensor indices gives F0i=+Ei/c while leaving Fij=Fij. An array with all upper indices cannot be used unchanged as the corresponding array with all lower indices. The propagation Lorentz four-vector nμ=(1,s) for unit spatial direction s similarly has nμ=(1,−s). These signs matter in contractions that encode Maxwell equations.
