For a film of thickness H, axial length L≫H, and velocity U, the ratio of convective inertia to transverse viscous stress in lubrication theory is UH2/(νL). On a small incline of slope θ, lubrication gravity-current flux gives U∼gθH2/ν when H≪θL, and U∼gH3/(νL) when H≫θL. The respective criteria are gθH4/(ν2L)≪1 and gH5/(ν2L2)≪1. Unsteady inertia also requires H2/(νT)≪1 if the evolution timescale T is independent of L/U.
