For a finite-action SU(2) connection on R4 that approaches A=−dgg−1 at infinity,
k=24π21∫S∞3Tr[(dgg−1)∧3]
(1)
under the convention k=(8π2)−1∫Tr(F∧F). This integer is the degree of a map between oriented manifolds g:S∞3→SU(2)≅S3; orientation and trace conventions may reverse its sign.
