If S0=a and Sn=S⌊n/2⌋+m for positive integers n, each halving removes one binary digit until zero is reached. There are 1+⌊log2n⌋ such steps. The formula follows by strong induction, using ⌊log2⌊n/2⌋⌋=⌊log2n⌋−1 for n≥2 and checking n=1 separately. With fixed positive m, this is Θ(logn) as n→∞; the zero case retains its separately defined value.
