Gauge fixing removes the noninvertible longitudinal direction of the Maxwell quadratic action. In a gauge with parameter ξ, the Fourier kernel is −k2ημν+(1−ξ−1)kμkν. Multiplying its inverse by i gives the photon propagator, with the Feynman i-epsilon prescription. At ξ=1 the answer is −iημν/(k2+i0).
