Assume optically thin photoionization equilibrium and an absorber depth of order its local Jeans length, L∝(fgT/nH)1/2, where fg is the local gas fraction. Then NHI≃α(T)nH2L/Γ∝[α(T)/Γ](fgT)1/2nH3/2. Solving for nH and substituting in NH=nHL gives the displayed correction. Thus the ionized mass integral weights the neutral-hydrogen column-density distribution by NHI1/3 rather than NHI. This model does not apply without modification to optically thick systems or arbitrary unconfined gas.
