Junkichi Satsuma coauthored A Soliton Cellular Automaton by Daisuke Takahashi and Junkichi Satsuma, introducing a discrete model in which localized patterns interact while preserving their identities. The box-ball system makes soliton behavior visible through an update rule on occupied and empty boxes.
The publisher abstract also describes infinitely many conserved quantities. This contribution connects nonlinear-wave ideas with an explicitly discrete dynamical system, rather than requiring a continuous fluid equation.[ref]
