C. V. Raman and K. S. Krishnan observed additional spectral lines in light scattered by liquids. Filtering the illumination made it possible to distinguish these new components from lines already present in the incident spectrum. In the Raman effect, exchanged energy changes the scattered photon's frequency, providing information about molecular energy levels. The experiment thus turned a faint part of scattering of light into a probe of molecular structure.[ref]
