Let B(H)=B(H,⋅) be the Killing form identification of a Cartan subalgebra with its dual. The root-space decomposition gives B(H,K)=∑β∈Φβ(H)β(K), and therefore the displayed root expansion. On the real coroot span its coefficients are real, proving B(hR)⊆RP. For sl3 and H12=E11−E22, the formula gives B(H12)=6(L1−L2). The normalization is B(X,Y)=tr(adXadY), not a rescaled trace form.
