In the quadrant x,y>0, a line vortex of circulation Γ at (x,y) has three images: circulations −Γ at (−x,y) and (x,−y), and +Γ at (−x,−y). Their induced velocity is
x˙=4πy(x2+y2)Γx2,y˙=−4πx(x2+y2)Γy2.

In polar coordinates, these equations give r˙=Γcot(2θ)/(2πr) and θ˙=−Γ/(4πr2). Direct differentiation yields dtd(rsin2θ)=0, so the trajectory obeys rsin2θ=constant.
