For pressureless matter in Newtonian gauge in cosmology with a common metric potential Φ, let θ=∇⋅v. The linear equations δm′=−θ+3Φ′ and θ′=−Hθ−∇2Φ, where primes denote conformal time, yield
δm′′+Hδm′=∇2Φ+3(Φ′′+HΦ′).

This follows by differentiating the first equation and eliminating θ. On deeply subhorizon scales with a slowly varying matter potential, the metric time derivatives are small compared with its spatial Laplacian.
