For a transverse monochromatic electromagnetic wave with angular frequency ω=0, ∂t2E=−ω2E. The displayed electric potential and magnetic vector potential therefore give −∇Φ−∂tA=E. Transversality gives ∇⋅A=0, so the Lorenz gauge holds. For E=E0(cosθ,sinθ,0) and θ=ωt−Kz, taking a curl yields B=(K/ω)z×E. The vacuum Maxwell equations require K2=ω2/c2. The field has circular polarization, with ∣B∣=∣E∣/c and perpendicular electric and magnetic directions.
