Integrating the Bose-Einstein distribution against the three-dimensional Debye model phonon density of states gives Nph=9N(T/ΘD)3∫0ΘD/Tx2/(ex−1)dx. For T≪ΘD, expand (ex−1)−1=∑j≥1e−jx and integrate termwise: the limiting integral is 2∑j≥1j−3=2ζ(3). This counts thermal quanta, not available modes or half quanta of zero-point energy.
