Parameterize a material surface by fixed particle labels a,b, with tangents a=∂ax, b=∂bx. The material derivative gives Da/Dt=(∇u)a and similarly for b. Differentiate dS=(a×b)dadb and use the cross product identity
(Aa)×b+a×(Ab)=[(trA)I−AT](a×b).

This proves the displayed oriented-area evolution law, with (∇u)ij=∂jui. It allows both area change and rotation; even incompressible flow need not preserve the magnitude of a material area element.
