When a square matrix satisfies M2=κI, its powers reduce to M2n=κnI and M2n+1=κnM. Absolute convergence of the matrix exponential allows even and odd subseries to be separated. Thus C(κ)=∑n≥0κn/(2n)! and S(κ)=∑n≥0κn/(2n+1)!. For real κ>0, these are coshκ and sinhκ/κ. For κ<0, they are cos−κ and sin−κ/−κ. At κ=0, eM=I+M, including nonzero nilpotent matrices of square zero. This also explains the limiting sine-over-argument coefficients without dividing by zero.
