In a homogeneous Maxwell fluid, transverse momentum conservation and shear stress relaxation give τutt+ut=νuyy, where ν=μ/ρ is the kinematic viscosity. A Fourier mode eiky+σt has the displayed quadratic dispersion relation. For 4τνk2>1 its two exponents oscillate while decaying at rate 1/(2τ); for smaller wavenumbers they decay without oscillating. At fixed ν and k, τ→0 leaves the diffusion equation branch σ→−νk2 and removes the fast stress relaxation branch σ∼−1/τ.
