With s=Qcs​k/κ and δ=κϵ/(Qcs​), maximize F(s)=2se−δs−s2. Its unique positive critical point satisfies the displayed equation. For positive gravitational softening, e−δs∗​<1 and 1−δs∗​>0, giving the strict bound. Unsoftened gravity has s∗​=1.
