For the convention x=Im(RFeiωt), viscous damping b gives R=[m(ω02−ω2)+ibω]−1. Put δ=ω−ω0 and γ=b/(2m). If both are small relative to ω0, the displayed approximation follows. Its squared modulus has half-width γ, and the displacement lags the force by π/2 at ω=ω0.
