Nonuniqueness of spectral-norm low-rank approximation (∥A−(Ar+tu1v1T)∥2=σr+1(∣t∣≤σr+1))

Even distinct singular values do not make a best low-rank approximation unique in the spectral norm. If A=∑j=1nσjujvjT has σ1>⋯>σn>0 and 1≤r<n, its truncated singular value decomposition Ar can be changed to Ar+tu1v1T for any ∣t∣≤σr+1. Its matrix rank stays r since σ1+t>0, while the spectral norm error is max(∣t∣,σr+1)=σr+1, the optimum from the Eckart-Young-Mirsky theorem.
