With σ2=∥Y−Xβ∥2/(n−p), a simultaneous (1−α) confidence region for β is
(β−β)TXTX(β−β)≤pσ2Fp,n−p(1−α).

Normal linear-model confidence ellipsoid
If β(i) is the least-squares estimate after deleting observation i, Cook's distance is
Di=pσ2(β(i)−β)TXTX(β(i)−β)=pσ2∥Y(i)−Y∥2.

It measures the deleted estimate in the same quadratic metric as the coefficient confidence ellipsoid.
