For bounded self-adjoint T, put B=βI−T≥0 with β=supW(T). Unit vectors with ⟨Bun,un⟩→0 satisfy ∥Bun∥2≤∥B∥⟨Bun,un⟩ by positive-form Cauchy-Schwarz inequality. Thus β is an approximate eigenvalue. Applying the same argument to T−αI proves the result at α=infW(T).
