With parameter a≥0, oblate spheroidal coordinates on Euclidean three-space are
x=r2+a2sinθcosϕ,y=r2+a2sinθsinϕ,z=rcosθ.
(1)
Writing Σ=r2+a2cos2θ and Δ=r2+a2, their spatial line element is
dl2=ΔΣdr2+Σdθ2+Δsin2θdϕ2.

Oblate spheroidal coordinates
Starting from the Minkowski metric in oblate spheroidal coordinates, set u=t−r, R=r, and choose an azimuth φ satisfying
dφ=dϕ−R2+a2adR.
(1)
Then
ds2=−du2−2dudR+2asin2θdRdφ+(R2+a2cos2θ)dθ2+(R2+a2)sin2θdφ2,
(2)
so the coordinate vector ∂R is null.
