For a laterally uniform nematic director (cosθcosϕ,cosθsinϕ,sinθ), its divergence is cosθθ′ and its twist invariant is −cos2θϕ′. Thus f=K1cos2θ+K3sin2θ and g=K2cos4θ+K3sin2θcos2θ. A normal electric field contributes −csin2θ. The Euler-Lagrange equations for two fields are (gϕ′)′=0 and fθ′′+fθθ′2/2−gθϕ′2/2+2csinθcosθ=0.
