The oscillator length fixes the spatial scale of a quantum harmonic oscillator of mass m and angular frequency ω. Its normalized ground wavefunction is φ0(x)=π−1/4ℓ−1/2exp[−x2/(2ℓ2)], so ∣φ0(0)∣2=1/(πℓ) and ⟨x2⟩=ℓ2/2. The definition of ℓ is distinct from the root-mean-square displacement ℓ/2.
