A dimensionless measure of the intensity of a specified optical transition. It combines the transition matrix element and transition energy; selection rules, Polarization and the distribution of electronic states determine which transitions carry appreciable absorption. Peak position alone does not give the absorbed fraction.

Oscillator strength is a dimensionless quantity used in spectroscopy to quantify the probability of absorption or emission of electromagnetic radiation by an atom or molecule during a transition between energy levels. It is particularly important in the study of electronic transitions in atoms and molecules.
