Linearization of the Lorenz model of thermosolutal convection at conduction yields (λ+σ)(λ+1)(λ+τ)−σr(λ+τ)+σrs(λ+1)=0. A Hopf bifurcation requires the cubic coefficient identity a3=a1a2 and positive frequency squared. Its threshold is the stated rH, with ω2=σrs(1−τ)/(σ+1)−τ2>0. If rs=β2τ and δ=σ/(1+σ), then rH=1+τ/δ+β2τδ+O(τ2). Comparing with the steady fold of a thermosolutal Lorenz model gives a leading nonnegative difference τ(βδ−1)2/δ for β≥0.
