An experimental physicist who coauthored the observation of X-ray diffraction by crystals. A photographic plate recorded direction-dependent spots from radiation transmitted through a crystal, linking the periodic arrangement of matter to interference of short-wavelength waves. The result made crystalline structure accessible through the geometry of a diffraction pattern.[ref]
