The center of an associative algebra is the subalgebra
Z(A)={z∈A:za=az for every a∈A}.
(1)
For a pair (z1,z2), commuting with every (a1,a2) means z1a1=a1z1 and z2a2=a2z2. Varying the two coordinates independently proves both inclusions, hence
Z(A1×A2)=Z(A1)×Z(A2).
