Differentiate the parametric curve:
x˙=atcost,y˙=atsint.

The arc length element is ds=x˙2+y˙2dt=∣a∣tdt on 0≤t≤2. Thus
L=∫02∣a∣tdt=2∣a∣.
(2)
For a positive geometric scale a, this is 2a. The absolute value is necessary when the unspecified real constant a is negative; a=0 gives zero arc length.
