Define the free algebra functor FT by FTX=(TX,μX) and FTf=Tf. The monad laws make μX an algebra action, and naturality of μ makes Tf a monad algebra morphism. For an algebra for a monad (A,a), define
CT(FTX,(A,a))⟶C(X,A),h⟼hηX,
(1)
with proposed inverse g↦aTg. This inverse is a monad algebra morphism, since
(aTg)μX=aμAT2g=aTaT2g=aT(aTg).
(2)
One composite is aTgηX=aηAg=g. For a monad algebra morphism h, the other is aT(hηX)=aThTηX=hμXTηX=h. Both formulas commute with composition in a category in X and with monad algebra morphisms in (A,a), so the bijection is natural. Thus
FT⊣U.
