For a density matrix ρ on a finite-dimensional Hilbert space, its Von Neumann entropy in bits is
S(ρ)=−tr(ρlog2ρ)=−j∑λjlog2λj,
(1)
where λj are its eigenvalues and 0log20=0. It is the Shannon entropy of the spectrum, is zero for a pure state, and is invariant under unitary conjugation.
