The contraction of two Levi-Civita symbols gives [F×(∇×G)]i=Fj∂iGj−Fj∂jGi. Similarly [G×(∇×F)]i=Gj∂iFj−Gj∂jFi. Add the two directional-derivative terms to cancel the last terms, leaving
Fj∂iGj+Gj∂iFj=∂i(FjGj).
(1)
The product rule has therefore proved the gradient of a dot product identity
∇(F⋅G)=(F⋅∇)G+(G⋅∇)F+F×(∇×G)+G×(∇×F).
