For rate λ>0, return
X=−λ1logU1.
(1)
For x≥0, P(X>x)=P(U1<e−λx)=e−λx, so X has the exponential distribution of rate λ. This is inverse transform sampling; using −log(1−U1)/λ is equivalent. Uniform draws at exact endpoints can be excluded, since those events have probability zero under the ideal continuous law.
