For each node define its Lagrange interpolation cardinal polynomial ℓi(t)=∏j=i(t−xj)/(xi−xj). Its square has degree 2n−2<2n and nodal values ℓi(xj)2=δij. Exactness therefore gives ai=∫−11ℓi(t)2dt. The polynomial is nonzero, so continuity makes this integral strictly positive. Thus ai>0 for every node.
