Write qαβ=gαβ+nαnβ for the induced metric. By definition of the spatial covariant derivative,
Dμqαβ=PμρPασPβλ∇ρ(gσλ+nσnλ).
(1)
The spacetime Levi-Civita connection is metric compatible, so ∇g=0. The remaining terms contain either Pασnσ or Pβλnλ, each zero because nμnμ=−1. Therefore
Dμqαβ=0.
(2)
This verifies metric compatibility of the spatial covariant derivative directly, without assuming that the unprojected derivative of q vanishes.
