Conjugation αg(x)=gxg−1 is an automorphism of G sending A to gAg−1. It induces the bijection
xA⟼(gxg−1)(gAg−1)
(1)
between their left coset sets; conjugation by g−1 gives the inverse. Therefore
[G:gAg−1]=[G:A]=i.
(2)
This holds whether or not A is normal, and whether the index is finite or infinite.
