Choose the gravitational potential energy to vanish at infinity. The total mechanical energy is
E=2m(r˙2+r2θ˙2)−rGMm=2mh2((u′)2+u2)−GMmu.
(1)
Put γ=GM/h2 and φ=θ−θ0. From part (i), u=γ(1+ecosφ) and u′=−γesinφ. Consequently
(u′)2+u2=γ2(1+2ecosφ+e2),
(2)
and the angular terms cancel against the gravitational potential energy:
E=2h2mG2M2(e2−1).
(3)
For a nonradial Kepler orbit, negative, zero and positive mechanical energy correspond respectively to e<1, e=1 and e>1.
