Identify T2 with the product of two unit circles and use the unit sphere S2⊂R3. The surjective degree-zero sphere-to-torus map is
F(x,y,z)=(e2πix,e2πiy).
(1)
Given any torus point, choose its two angle representatives with x,y∈[−1/2,1/2]. Then x2+y2≤1/2, so z=1−x2−y2 completes a preimage on the sphere. Thus the map is surjective. The explicit homotopy Ft(x,y,z)=(e2πitx,e2πity), 0≤t≤1, contracts it to a constant map. By homotopy invariance of mapping degree, degF=0, despite surjectivity.
