A chain homotopy from g to f consists of homomorphisms sn:Cn→Cn+1′ such that
fn−gn=dn+1′sn+sn−1dn
(1)
for every n. If z∈Cn is a cycle, dnz=0, so fn(z)−gn(z)=dn+1′sn(z) is a boundary. Hence fn(z) and gn(z) represent the same homology class. Every homology class has a cycle representative, proving f∗=g∗ in every degree.
