Put the cylinder's centre at the origin, with −h/2≤z≤h/2, 0≤r≤a, and uniform density ρ=M/(πa2h). Symmetry makes the inertia tensor diagonal and gives I1=I2. Direct integration yields
I3=ρ∫−h/2h/2dz∫0ar3dr∫02πdθ=2Ma2.
(1)
For a transverse principal moment of inertia, the two contributions are
∫y2dm=ρh4a4∫02πsin2θdθ=4Ma2,∫z2dm=ρπa212h3=12Mh2.
(2)
Therefore I1=I2=M(a2/4+h2/12),I3=Ma2/2 are the three principal moments of inertia.
