Write f=u+iv. The prescribed complex-linear differential is exactly the Cauchy-Riemann equations
ux=vy,uy=−vx.
(1)
A holomorphic function is smooth, as follows locally from its Cauchy integral formula, so its mixed second partial derivatives commute. Differentiating the two equations gives
Δu=uxx+uyy=vyx−vxy=0,
(2)
and, rewriting them as vx=−uy, vy=ux,
Δv=vxx+vyy=−uyx+uxy=0.
(3)
Thus Δℜf=Δℑf=0: both components are harmonic functions. Here Δ=∂x2+∂y2, the sign convention used for the Brownian generator Δ/2.
